In demanding outdoor applications, material durability is the critical factor determining product lifespan and reliability. Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), a class of materials combining rubber-like elasticity with plastic-like processability, show particularly interesting behavior under various environmental conditions. A new study systematically examines the weather resistance of multiple TPE blends, revealing their performance degradation mechanisms when exposed to ultraviolet radiation, humidity, heat, and oxidation over extended periods.

Quantifying Weather Resistance: Key Performance Metrics

The research evaluated core mechanical properties including hardness, tensile modulus, tensile strength, and elongation at break. The data revealed that all tested TPE polymers showed increasing hardness and tensile modulus during exposure periods. This phenomenon is commonly attributed to the desorption (leaching out) of plasticizers or softening oils from the material matrix.

As these additives migrate out of the polymer, molecular chain mobility decreases, resulting in increased rigidity. This effect was particularly pronounced in softer TPE formulations, where changes in hardness and modulus correlated strongly with alterations in elastic behavior.

While materials generally became more rigid, their toughness followed different trajectories. Partially crosslinked PP/EPDM blends showed the most significant reduction in elongation at break—a measure of how much a material can stretch before breaking. This substantial decrease indicates compromised ductility and increased susceptibility to brittle fracture.

All TPE blends demonstrated declining tensile strength after weathering, suggesting reduced resistance to stretching forces. This degradation likely stems from polymer chain breakdown, changes in crosslinking structures, or increased microstructural heterogeneity caused by plasticizer migration.

Dynamic Mechanical Analysis: Probing Molecular-Level Changes

Using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), researchers examined how TPE blends respond to temperature variations by measuring three key parameters:

Storage Modulus (E')

This measurement of elastic energy storage capacity—essentially material stiffness—showed results consistent with hardness and tensile modulus findings. Longer exposure times generally produced higher storage modulus values, reinforcing the plasticizer migration hypothesis. Below the glass transition temperature (Tg), storage modulus changes most clearly reflected overall stiffness variations.

Loss Modulus (E'')

Representing energy dissipation through viscous processes and internal friction, loss modulus peaks typically occur near the Tg, indicating maximum molecular chain mobility during the glass transition.

Damping Properties (tanδ)

The ratio of loss to storage modulus (tanδ) measures a material's energy absorption capacity. Near the Tg, damping factors peak, indicating optimal vibration absorption. Weathering exposure caused relatively minor damping property changes, suggesting that despite macroscopic mechanical alterations, TPEs largely maintain their fundamental energy dissipation mechanisms around the Tg.

Practical Implications for Material Selection

The combined static and dynamic analysis provides multidimensional insights for outdoor applications:

  • Material Selection: For long-term outdoor exposure (automotive components, building seals, outdoor furniture), weather-resistant TPE formulations should be prioritized. PP/EPDM materials require careful evaluation when high ductility is essential.
  • Performance Prediction: DMA techniques enable earlier, more accurate forecasting of long-term degradation patterns, supporting reliability engineering.
  • Formulation Optimization: Addressing plasticizer migration through low-mobility additives, antioxidants, UV absorbers, or crosslink density adjustments can enhance weather resistance.
  • Application Boundaries: Understanding temperature-dependent mechanical behavior helps define optimal operating ranges, preventing temperature-induced failures.

This research establishes a scientific framework for evaluating TPE performance in harsh environments while advancing fundamental understanding of degradation mechanisms—critical knowledge for developing durable, high-performance outdoor products.
